The ‘Queen’ Visits ‘Guam’

Posted by admin on 23rd February 2010

In light of yesterday’s comments regarding the Queen Mary II and her visit to Guam:

She left New York January 4th on a 63 day voyage through the Mediterranean,  across the Indian Ocean, up to Hong Kong,  Shanghai, over to Nagasakai, around to Tokyo and Monday down here to Guam.

View from the bridge from QM II’s Bridge CAM

It was not only an international  crowd but a well heeled one too. The lowest priced suites for the 63 day voyage
$13-thousand dollars. The luxury penthouse suit $149-thousand.

This is a sophisticated and luxurious cruise liner and a big one too. About four city blocks long and 21 stories high.

Security was tight around the ship. The U.S. Coast Guard restricted pleasure boaters to a distance of 100 yards
around the ship. Violators would have faced a felony charge.

Port General Manager Rick Augstin says it was critical for the visit to go smoothly and pleasantly for all the visitors because Guam wants to prove it can handle ships like the QM II in order to attract other cruise liners in the future.

Vendors were carefully screened for their prices and the wares. And, for the arriving visitors here their day on Guam seemed to get off to a good start.

The QM II is now on its way to Papua New Guinea

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my ‘loyal’(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

Readers: I too find it very interesting that so many people are headed to Guam…more than any other time. Are they all searching for the same thing? - The golden gate? Because believe me, who ever discovers it, would attain riches beyond their imagination. Their golden years might come early (That’s a nod to you Bob :) All very exciting and yet,  what else could happen? Global and intergalactic wars would be my guess. What do you think?

Madaline: What if anything did we learn from the little aliens and what happened to them?

FYI Readers: Madaline did inform me that their ship was electrically run.

Mike and Maggie: Thanks for your articles. They were both a good support to my article. But then the GOP’s make that easy don’t they? As the saying goes, ‘There’s honor among thieves’.

Zen Lill: Speaking of honor…Freedom of speech is honored here, as well as encouraged. You need never to ask my permissions to write about anything. As I say to you and everyone, feel free to write about all and any topics, as much as you want, anytime you want.  Don’t hold back - go for it.

Cindy: It is never to late to open up and accept. The great thing is that you realized how silly you were being by being prejudiced. And it sounds like you took on that role because of your silly husband. Good for you for starting to think on your own. It is a loss when we don’t let individuals in our lives because of prejudices. There is so much we can give and learn from each other. I’m just happy you have realized this and hopefully now you’re going to do something about it.

Nora: I wish I could say your comment was ’short and sweet’, but all I can say is ’short and sick’.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my ‘loyal’(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. ‘Just Noticing’: Observations Of A Blogger

Posted by admin on 24th January 2010

The other day I was in my bank waiting for the teller to assist me. And no, it was not my new local bank; I did close my account at my present bank, Wells Fargo - one of the ‘biggies’, but I have not opened it at my local bank yet. But this week, now that I have everything in order to  make the big move to a littler bank :)

Anyway, I found myself in the bank looking around and ‘just noticing’. What I saw in my moment of waiting compelled me to start this new blog write called: ’Just Noticing’: Observations Of A Blogger.

What I like about this is, by ‘just noticing’, it forces me to stay in the present moment….helping me to see things that I might just skip over had I not made a conscious effort to ‘just notice’. Are you with me?

I decided right there and then that maybe Sunday would be my day for reporting  what I noticed during the past week. I thought that if I got more into the habit of quieting my mind and ‘just noticing’, I might be able to inspire my readers to do the same same :), and we could make Sunday, a day of sharing what we ‘noticed’. Just a maybe…we’ll see how this next week plays out.

So…as my week progressed, and I had this topic on my mind, I ‘noticed’ that the more ‘present’ I was, the more I was able to observe and take note. I felt more involved in the world as opposed to moving through it at lightening speed - my usual.

So….being that it is Sunday, I will share with you what I ‘noticed’ in this past week. I decided that I would write them, in no particular order, in a list format for easy reading.  Feel free to comment on any of these if you like, or tell us of something that you ‘just noticed.’ It doesn’t have to be anything revolutionary…it doesn’t have to be an ‘aha’ moment…but if it is, that’s okay too.

My only stipulation in ‘just noticing’ is that I do it and convey it to you without judgement. I decided I wanted to act as just an observer and leave the emotion out of it. My intention is to accomplish just that. I encourage you to do the same if you decide to join in.

Here’s my list. The first one is the impetus behind this new Sunday write.

  • While at the bank, I was just noticing that 90% of the employees were otw’s, and about 90% of their banking customers were otw’s. I was the whitest girl there. Hmmm. This was no big deal but then, what I noticed was that in every brochure, in every poster advertising their bank, the models were all white, except for one. It was of a little back girl with very light skin, wearing a hat, so you could barely tell she was an otw.
  • When you take a deep breath, notice that a thought cannot entire your mind at the same time.
  • What I know is that people tout ‘integrity’ as being a quality…a characteristic that people look for and expect in others. However, lately, the power of transparency, via the internet, media, etc. shows me that many people who pride themselves on their integrity…many who are the first to jump at the chance to throw someone under the bus for the lack of it,  truly do not exemplify integrity themselves at all. It appears to me that people of integrity are few and far between.
  • While driving the other day on the bridge, I sped up to pass someone. I noticed he sped up too. I thought, “Do I do that too?”
  • An old high school friend who reads my blog said to me, “You are way left Michelle, a major liberal.” Up until that point, I never considered myself a ‘liberal’; I didn’t label my actions or views. I just always believed in equality, fairness, and doing what is right for all. If you can delete all of the ‘isms’, from your thoughts, your life, everyone knows what is ‘right’. If wanting those things means I am a liberal, then so be it; label me a liberal.

Not judging…just noticing.

Readers: What have you been ‘just noticing’? Care to share? Blog me.

Mindy & Keith: Thanks for being so diligent in trying to post. You did get in :) but maybe you didn’t actually get to express what you wanted to say. So sorry… Oh and Keith, too bad the relationship didn’t last, but I’m happy  you’re still tuning in here.

Mike: I hear you. Thanks for continuing to post here.

Oio: I was remise in making a comment to you when you wrote in last week. One of the reasons I didn’t write in was because I wasn’t sure what you were implying in your comment.  After thinking about it, I am under the impression that you believe Azza is taking sides, and the side you think she has chosen is the galaxy she is presently residing in, which is not the Oio galaxy.

I know Azza, and I know that she didn’t go there to interfere in the Oston wars, the war between the two galaxies, one being the Oio galaxy. And I was informed that Azza was asked by one of the planets to intercede in their behalf. This particular planet, as I am sure there are many in both galaxies, did not sign up for this war; and therefore they do not want to participate in this war.

Azza is helping this planet who happens to reside in the galaxy fighting the Oio galaxy - I assure you, she is not taking sides. This planet and probably other planets that did not choose to participate in this war seem to be considered nothing more than collateral damage. This is apparently  and understandably unacceptable to Azza.

If there is a side to be taken, and I suppose in all arguements one has to take a side, even if the side is to not take either side, then that is the position Azza  happens to be on. She is not siding with  your galaxy, nor the other galaxy; she is siding with whomever is on the side subject to being considered collateral damage, no matter which of the two galaxies they reside in,  and whom wants nothing to do with this war.

Perhaps Oio could send a representative to assure Azza that this planet, and others who do not want to participate,  will not become collateral damage. If you wish to continue your belligerency then you must be conscious of others in your war path, you must be considerate of others….considerate of the planets who do not wish to be involved in your belligerency. Until Azza feels sure that this will be the case, she and her crew will continue to fight and assist whomever, in any way they can, in either galaxy.

If you refuse to do so or you just don’t, and you continue with your belligerent acts, Azza will continue to do what she is doing as well as solicit aid from any and all to help. In fact this is a call to any and all aliens who wish to assist her in helping those who do not wish to participate in the Oston Wars.

Take note, that I am also considering my position as far as aid is concerned in the matter.

You and all parties  can answer me here any time you wish. I welcome and look forward to any and all responses. Thank you.

Okay readers….I’m out of here. Have a lovely Sunday and may peace be your sidekick where ever you reside.

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle

Saturday Chitchat: Catching Up With My Readers

Posted by admin on 24th October 2009

Hi Ruth: I am finally getting to your comment a few days ago. How are you? Ya know, I have not tried fish oil but I know many people take it so I can’t give you my thoughts on its health benefits. But I can tell you that I took organic flaxseed oil softgels with Omega 3 by Spectrum for many years and did not know the true benefits for me until I stopped taking it a few months ago. Needless to say, today is the day for me to go pick some up. Hope you are doing well!

Ligaya: Wow. Naomi Tacuyan Underwood is an amazing woman - thank you for sharing your article. She is certainly an inspiration and I wish her the best.

Veronica: I hear you. And although I do not have children, getting my blog out as early as I do has been a continuing challenge, and unfortunately there are things happening in my life that may delay it even more so, I am sorry to say. More on this later. Thank you though for your honesty and for telling me how much my blog means to you. It means a lot to me and I put many things ahead of it that is not in my best interest. More on that later too. But don’t worry, I don’t see myself not blogging any time soon.

Hi Peter: How goes it? Thank you for staying so on top of it in regards to the abuse of minors by the church. Keep us posted of your efforts.

Hey Ursla: I know I quoted you from the other day, but I don’t think I thanked you for your support in regards to your comment. Thank you :)

Joe Biden: Now wouldn’t that be a hoot if it was really you commenting on my blog!

Thanks Wiiiiam and York for making your contribution to the cause!

Hi Evelyn: How are you? Thanks for posting your article on breast cancer and the tough decisions that a woman needs to make when faced with breast cancer. I hope that I never have to face making those types of decisions in my life. I hope that for all women. Oh and thanks for the kudos. :)

In regards to your post yesterday. That just infuriates me. I was recently on a BC called Jolessa and without getting too personal, it was horrible. I can’t tell you how many side effects I had. Maybe I’ll blog about it sometime. We trust that our best interest is at heart, but it isn’t. I can tell you one thing, if a man was the one who got pregnant, the pill would be perfected with very little side effects, if any.

Hey Zen Lill: My pleasure. Thanks too for all you’re doing.

JC: They have already informed the public that there is a shortage of the vaccine, and people who were not interested in the taking the vaccine to prevent H1N1 are now rushing to get it.  I wouldn’t surprise me if that wasn’t a hoax just to get people to do just that: rush out to get it. I personally am not going to take it. I believe prevention is the best protection, which means washing my hands thoroughly all of the time, keeping my hands away from my face etc, and keeping up with supplements to protect myself, as well as not going out to eat. I know the last one is a bit much but hey, my health means a lot to me, and I know the stats of people who don’t wash their hands. It’s pretty disgusting.  Stay healthy.

Al: You have every reason to be proud of your father. If the rest of our country felt the same way we would be in a much better position. Thanks for supporting health care - were you able to finally get through?

So….onto the chitchat of the day….

It seems many of you have read about the Northwest airlines flight. I have read the articles; I included one below.  And yes it is strange that this isn’t just all over the news. It is very surreptitious to say the least. And if this plane was taken over by these same inter-dimensional beings who were invading the Farallon de Medinilla, then we definitely have a situation on our hands, and being secretive about it would be expected.

150 Mile Overshot

Federal officials are working to sort out whether pilots of a Northwest Airlines flight dozed off or were simply distracted Wednesday night when they fell out of contact with air-traffic controllers for more than an hour and overshot their destination by 150 miles.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating, among other things, whether the two pilots fell asleep at the controls. The pair told law-enforcement officials who interviewed them upon landing in Minneapolis — and apparently told fellow pilots later — that they had been engaged in a “heated discussion over airline policy and they lost situational awareness,” according to the NTSB.

News Hub: Pilots Asleep at the Controls?

2:46

A Northwest flight overshoots its destination by more than 100 miles, prompting questions about whether the pilots were nodding off. WSJ’s Andy Pasztor and Gabriel Kahn discuss the latest developments in the inquiry in the News Hub.

Whatever the reason, the plane may have flown out of range of one air-traffic-control center and failed to take steps to get back on course and resume radio contact with controllers, according to industry and government officials close to the situation.

During the 78-minute radio silence, controllers became so concerned about the fate of the 149 people aboard that they asked pilots of other aircraft in the vicinity to see if they could rouse the Northwest crew, according to industry and government officials. When that failed, the Federal Aviation Administration and military official began to consider having fighter jets scrambled to intercept the twin-jet Airbus A320, these officials said.

When an aircraft fails to respond for such a long time, it is routine procedure to send fighters to try to determine the problem.

The incident — which pilots and safety experts consider a bizarre break from routine procedure — had the plane crossing various air-traffic-control zones and being passed to different groups of controllers without any verbal response. It comes as federal regulators, lawmakers and airlines are focusing on the issue of pilot fatigue and debating possible changes to rules that spell out how long pilots can fly or be on duty in a 24-hour period.

Pilots Argue at 37,000 Feet

2:36

A Northwest jetliner overshot an airport in Minnesota because the crew members were having a heated argument. Video courtesy of Fox News.

Northwest Flight 188, which took off from San Diego and had been flying at an altitude of 37,000 feet when contact was lost, eventually circled back and landed safely in Minneapolis without injuries. For a normal approach, the plane should have started slowing and descending as much as 30 minutes prior to touchdown.

Once on the ground at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, the pilots were interviewed by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and airport police. The plane’s cockpit voice recorder — which may be able to store up to two hours of data — will be analyzed by federal investigators.

Northwest’s parent company, Delta Air Lines Inc., said, “We are cooperating with the FAA and NTSB in their investigation as well as conducting our own internal investigation. The pilots have been relieved from active flying pending the completion of these investigations.”

Investigators also plan to review data from the plane’s digital flight-data recorder, which could offer clues as to what transpired during the period when airport controllers lost contact with the plane. Initially, investigators focused on the possibility that both pilots might have fallen asleep in midflight, but later indications were that the crew may have lost track of where they were and then failed to swiftly notify controllers about their lapse.

Pilot fatigue has long been regarded as one of the most serious safety issues confronting commercial aviation. The FAA, airlines and pilot unions now all agree U.S. rules dealing with pilot fatigue are outdated and don’t reflect the latest science.

The FAA wants to replace the one-size-fits-all rules on pilot workdays with a system that takes into consideration things such as the time of day pilots work, the number of takeoffs they perform and the internal body clocks of crew members.

Readers: Do you really believe that they had a heated argument? Please - are we idiots to think that both of the pilots fell asleep simultaneously or that they got into a heated discussion and lost situational awareness, and overshot their destination by over 150 miles?! They must really think we are gullible. If this really were the case, as Wayne mentioned,  this would be all over the news like the balloon hoax.

I’m outta here, but please continue to discuss if you choose. It certainly is interesting and intriguing to say the least, and I look forward to hearing and learning more.

Peace & Love & Safety: “Live it, Give it & Have it!”

Discover Guam

Posted by admin on 1st September 2009

Good Morning Everyone.

Readers: It has been pretty slow in blogsville these past few days. Not sure if anyone is having any issues getting in since I haven’t heard from anyone but Howie.

Howie: You were having trouble with your computer, but you seem to be the only one able to comment - lucky you. :)

Anyway, Hi Anna & Peter: I thought that I would post another article on Guam since I am sure the local Chamorros are wondering what’s happening here. I found this article a few weeks ago but maybe you haven’t seen it yet.  Enjoy! Hafa Adai.

“About 5000 years ago, our ancestors arrived here, probably from Southeast Asia, on canoes made from breadfruit trees which were lashed together with coconut fiber,” Rob Limtiaco, one of the last experts on Chomorro canoe building, explains. These days the island territory of Guam is focusing on reviving its ancient culture and celebrating its unique mixture of ethnicities.

The first inhabitants, the Chamorro people, probably traveled here by canoe from Southeast Asia. During long ancient voyages, they used the stars and currents, even feeling the movement of the waves in their sleep, for guidance. A unique group of canoe builders, students from the University of Guam, as part of the Proa Project, are reviving the ancient Chomorro canoe carving art as well as the traditional navigation techniques of following the stars and currents. Recently they launched the maiden voyage of a Chamorro sakman, or traditional 22 foot outrigger canoe.

The first European to land here was Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, introducing 300 years of Spanish rule. Then followed Japanese and finally United States control. In 1950, President Truman made Guam an unincorporated territory and its people U.S. citizens

War in the Pacific National Historic Park
with John Benavente, guide

An excellent local tour company, “Discover Guam,” provides an individualized itinerary with John Benavente, senior guide, anthropology and history buff.

At the War in the Pacific National Historic Park, you can look down at Asan Beach and the enormous bay where thousands of U.S. Marines came ashore on July 21, 1944, to fight one of the definitive battles of WWII. Guam was bombed two hours after Pearl Harbor. The famed monument of Hands Praying for Peace reflects on the more than one-half million Japanese and American soldiers who died here. Today this park boasts a lovely picnic area, a very positive improvement in usage.

A highlight of any visit is a drive through some of the rural villages of Southern Guam and a visit to Gef Pa’go, a replica of an ancient Chamorro Village. Here locals demonstrate aspects of the island’s traditional culture, including their ancient arts of weaving, baking, and rope making. At the Wednesday Night Market traditional dancing and food are featured. The Chamorro name for this island is “Guahan,” which translates into “We have.” This sentiment reflects the natural richness of the island.

Mysterious pillars at Latte Stone Park

One of the mysteries of Guam are the ancient limestone columns, dating from around 1700 BCE. You can view them at Latte Stone Park and puzzle over their usage, probably as the pillars of rulers’ houses as well as official buildings.

Guam has a lot to offer in the underwater world. 51% of the Guam Natural Park’s 2000 acres is underwater and protected. Described as one of the world’s least expensive scuba diving and certification spots, Guam challenges divers from around the world to experience the world’s tallest ocean mountain and the world’s deepest point, the Mariana Trench. Sinking down into the Blue Hole, probably Guam’s most famous dive site, thrills even a seasoned diver. I Am The Proud Owner Of Two…

Posted by admin on 23rd June 2009

Good morning…

Anna:  I do hope that one day soon I will make it out there. I would love to meet you and Peter and all of your Chamorro friends.  A lot is going on with Guam…from the discovery of the Alien shuttlecraft in the Mariana Islands, to the circulation of your new Guam Quarter.  So in light of the latter, this article is dedicated to you Anna, and all of the Chamorros.

Readers: I wanted to share the little Gift that Anna sent me from Guam last week. I am now the proud owner of two Guam Quarters.  They just went into circulation this past May 26th, and I am delighted to have them in my little hands - Thank you again Anna for such a thoughtful gesture!  Check ‘em out.

Cool huh? The Guamanians, I am sure, are so proud, not to mention all of the people of the Mariana Islands.  I’m excited for them that their homeland is featured. Read on…

The Guam Quarter was released into circulation on May 26, 2009. This was the third release of the 2009 DC & US Territories Quarter Program. This program is a follow up to the popular 50 State Quarters Program.

The design features most prominently, an outline of the island of Guam. Two symbols associated with the island are also pictured. At left is a sailing vessel known as the “Flying Proa” for its great speed. At right is a Latte, a stone pillar used in ancient houses. The reverse was designed by David Westwood and sculpted by Jim Licaretz.

The inscriptions read “Guam,” “Guahan I Tanó ManChamorro,” (translated: Guam- Land of the Chamorro), “E Pluribus Unum,” and the date. The second inscription refers to Chamorro, one of the official languages of Guam which holds an important place in Guam’s identity as a link to their ancestors. It’s usage is seeing a renaissance in Guam and the Mariana Islands.

Another proposed design included a depiction of the Flying Proa sailing within the East Hagåtña Bay. A coconut tree appeared to the right and Two Lovers Point was in the background. The residents of Guam made their design selection based on a popular vote.

An official launch ceremony for the Guam Quarter was held on June 4, 2009 at Skinner Plaza in Hagatna, Guam. The ceremony was hosted by US Mint Director Edmund Moy and Guam Governor Felix P Camacho. After the ceremony children were given a free Guam Quarter and adults were allowed to exchange bills for new rolls of coins. Prior to the ceremony, a collectors coin forum was held.

The Guam Quarter Mint is the lowest so far for the US Territories Quarters Program. There were only 42,600,000 coins produced at the Denver Mint and 45,000,000 produced at the Philadelphia Mint. This low mintage might lead many to consider this a key date coin.

Coin Specifications:

  • Mintage: 45,000,000 (Philadelphia), 42,600,000 (Denver)
  • Designers: William Cousins after John Flanagan (obverse), David Westwood (reverse)
  • Composition: 91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel (clad), 90% silver, 10% copper (silver proof)
  • Diameter: 24.26 mm
  • Weight: 5.67 grams
  • Thickness: 1.75 mm
  • Edge: Reeded

If you are a collector, no doubt, you would want to purchase a few of your own Guam Quarters and add them to your own collection.  I have never been a collector of much and I doubt that I am going to start now, but I do  love being introduced to something new. And I love surrounding myself with unique little specialties. And these coins are one of them - I can’t wait to show them around and brag. You bet I will. Ah…it is the little things in life :)

That is all I have time for this morning. Please continue as you do and chat amongst yourselves. I’ll catch ya later.
